The third grade recently completed our annual unit on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Each year we read this delightful book which emphasizes the love of family as its core theme. Good vs. evil, money does not buy happiness, these basic principles of life are touched on through out the book. The third grade did numerous activities including writing, "inventing new creations" using wonderful imagination, vocabulary usage, and art activities as supplemental work. We culminated our unit with the annual "Chocolate Day" . Chocolate Day has been a tradition for fourteen years. We began our day with grandparents portraying the four grandparents in the book. Their treats are always delicious. Following this we traditionally tour a chocolate factory. This year we went to Young Chef's Academy and created Lava Cakes. After lunch we returned to our classroom where our wonderful parents transformed our classroom into a magical event. We even have each year a special guest Mr. Willy Wonka, (always played by one of our fathers!) It was a glorious time, hopefully one that the third graders will remember for a lifetime.
