                        Second Grade

Every child has a right to experience success in school.  Opportunities for success are evident in every classroom at Immaculata. Students abilities are assessed and instruction is adjusted to maintain an appropriate level of challenge. A variety of ways to demonstrate knowledge,  intelligence, and mastery is offered.   

Here's a sample of  the 2nd Grade curriculum:

MATH: The Saxon Math Program- We will learn ALL the basic + and - facts, plus learn the X facts 0-5.  Assessments are given every 5th lesson.  Homework reflects that day's classwork.

LANGUAGE ARTS:  Our "Strategies for Writers" Program takes the students through the 5 steps of the writing process: 1. Prewriting- using Graphic Organizers like Storyboards, Venn Diagrams, Webs, Order Chains, etc.  2. Writing  3. Revising 4. Editing (focusing on capitalization, ending marks, contractions, etc) 5. Publishing. We will be writing Narratives, Friendly Letters, Descriptive Paragraphs, Compare and Contrast Papers, Reports, Fables, Persuasive Papers, and Opinion Speeches.

Religion: 1st Reconciliation in February

               1st Communion in May.

Saxon Phonics and Spelling 2

Science: Hands-on activities using Foss Kits to learn about Air and Weather, Sound, and Life Cycles (insects and egg incubation).

Social Studies: Learning about community life, with a focus on Hendersonville, map skills, land forms, etc.

Reading: Basel Readers, Guided Groups, Centers. 10 AR Points and 3 Home Reading Records every quarter.
