 Reading

Our new textbook incorporates fun stories and interesting nonfiction while developing reading skills, examining literary elements, and building writing skills.   I have selected several class novels that compliment our text to read intermitantly throughout the year. Thus far, we have read Chasing Vermeer, Treasure Island, and The Tale of Despereaux.  Presently, we are reading both fiction and nonfiction stories about animals and our environment. We are integrating our reading selections with science studies.

 Some helpful websites:

  Religion

We read and discuss religion every morning from 8:00 until 8:30. As is custom, we take turns reading, then share in class discussions.  A religion test is given at the end of every chapter. To perform well on tests, students must pay attention to the readings in class, and then re-read at home as necessary. They must be familiar with the vocabulary and key points in the chapter. Some religion tests will be "open book", while others will be "open note." This way students note taking skills should increase, readying them for middle and high school.

 Math

Regarding the Saxon math program, we complete one lesson per day on average. Students complete homework each night and tests are given on Wednesdays. This wonderful program breaks the study of mathematics into brief, easy to understand lessons. The program builds on prior lessons as it progresses; therefore, to succeed students must master and retain concepts and skills as they move through the year. In the end, should have a good grasp on all the concepts taught, and be well equipped to move forward to the next grade.
